Bathroom Grego

Exquisite wellness

Interior architect Grego van den Broek has been using Hotbath taps in his designs for years. For this townhouse in Breda, he created an entirely new interior in a warm, minimalist style. The luxurious bathroom – more a wellness space than a bathroom – is perhaps the most beautiful room in the house.

By opening a large pivot glass door with slim wooden frames, you move from the bedroom into the spacious bathroom of this Breda townhouse. Measuring roughly six by six metres, the homeowners found the size challenging to arrange. But that’s where Grego van den Broek and his team from Grego Interior Architects come in. Together, they designed a warm, minimalist bathroom featuring a dark oak island and luxurious Taj Mahal quartzite.

The floor, walls and ceiling are finished with sand-coloured microcement. “These materials combine beautifully with the brushed brass taps from Hotbath,” Van den Broek explains. “They’re just a touch warmer and more elegant than, for example, black taps – which are beautiful too.

Walls first, then the taps

“When designing a bathroom, I usually start with the wall finish – tiles or microcement – followed by the woodwork and the taps. We choose the taps early in the process because they influence the overall look of the space.” Van den Broek often works with taps from the Cobber series due to the extensive range of models and colours. “The taps in this collection are timeless, functional and clean, which suits our style perfectly. Being able to choose from no fewer than ten finishes is a real advantage – few brands can match that.”

‘We like to surprise and do things just a little differently.’

Two washbasin mixers (CB023) are installed on the island. “The taps have a beautiful curve. The bathroom features many straight, clean lines, and the rounded shapes soften that.” A striking detail: the taps are positioned behind the basins, with the controls on the side. “It doesn’t make sense to reach over the basin to turn on the tap, so we placed the controls on the side. It’s a subtle twist that surprises people – and it’s practical too.”

We often tend to arrange bathrooms in predictable ways, but Van den Broek shows it can be done differently. “The owners wanted a calm and serene vibe. That’s one of the reasons we decided not to place mirrors above the basins. It keeps the room open and bright.” Of course, there’s still a mirror – positioned beside the island and designed in the same style as the bathroom. There’s even a dedicated make-up area for the lady of the house, with an additional mirror. In front of the island sits a freestanding bath paired with a floor-mounted bath mixer (CB177).
