Showering in an oasis of calm

After a major renovation, Charis and Justin recently moved into their new home near Barneveld. The bathroom has undergone the biggest transformation — something Charis’s nearly 32,000 Instagram followers agree on. The likes, enthusiastic reactions and questions are still pouring in six months later!

With two young children, no morning is ever the same for Charis and Justin. From the master bedroom, they can walk straight into the bathroom. While their son Lias watches a short video in bed, Charis hops into the shower and can keep an eye on him at the same time. Justin, meanwhile, is usually off to work before sunrise.

Charis: “Sometimes I shower in the morning together with Lias and Philou in our double walk-in shower. The hand shower is really convenient for rinsing them off or just for a bit of water play. I always use the Cobber overhead shower, model M106. Justin is two metres tall, so the showers needed to be mounted as high as possible. That’s why we chose the shortest ceiling arm, the CB452.”

An oasis of calm

Within eight weeks, Charis and Justin transformed their 1980s home from top to bottom. According to Charis, the bathroom underwent the biggest change. “The original bathroom was a small, dark space with a tiny skylight. I wouldn’t be surprised if it had been there since the house was built.” By incorporating a separate toilet into the bathroom and adding a four-metre-wide dormer window, the space went from dark and cramped to bright and spacious. “Now our bathroom is an oasis of calm, the perfect place to start the day with a smile.”

Where the separate toilet once was, there is now a double walk-in shower. The dormer window made space for a freestanding bath and a double vanity unit two metres wide. “We use the bath almost every day, fitted with the freestanding bath mixer CB177. Sometimes I add just a shallow layer of water so the kids can play for an hour. On weekends, we love taking it slow and often bathe together as a family.”

Japandi bathroom style with brushed brass

In their search for new taps, Charis asked her nearly 32,000 Instagram followers for advice. In their previous bathroom, they had black taps whose coating quickly peeled off. This time, they wanted to invest in quality. “It’s always reassuring to hear about others’ good experiences. Hotbath and another brand were mentioned most often. When we visited a showroom, we immediately leaned towards Hotbath because of the wide choice of colours and the beautiful finishes. The salesperson also recommended Hotbath, so our decision was made quickly.

The style that appealed to us was Japandi – a mix of sleek Scandinavian simplicity and warm Japanese aesthetics. Our brushed brass taps fit perfectly with this look. They’re finished with a PVD coating to preserve their beautiful colour. All our accessories are also from Hotbath and in the same brushed brass finish – the toilet brush, paper holder, towel hooks, rail and even the flush plate. The flush plate was an investment, but it’s these small details that complete the bathroom. Even the toilet looks stylish now — I often include it in photos for Instagram and my blog!”
